Personally, I am very proud of my Latino roots, and I am fully bilingual in the Spanish language. Growing up, my parents, siblings, and extended family were part of what I called Familia. In my journey through life, that definition of "family" went through many changes and shapes, but one thing was constant: children were a priority. This priority became part of my passion to help families.

It is my belief that we should all not only respect but embrace how a family defines themselves as family. To that end, I see the diversity of each family in many dimensions, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, religion, race, parental status, age, education, physical and mental ability, income, sexual orientation, occupation, language, and country of origin.

About me

Clinical work with families and children

I began my journey working with families in 1982 when I graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Later, I obtained my Master’s degree in Psychology with an emphasis on “Child, Marriage, and Family” from the California State University of Northridge. I have been a licensed Marriage and Family therapist since 1991.

  • For two years, I was a caseworker and supervisor at a child protection agency in Los Angeles, California.

  • I worked as a Director in an adolescent residential facility, and as a Family Therapist in a Day Treatment program.

  • For two years, I was the Clinical Director for a domestic violence organization.

  • I was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Denver, Graduate School of Social Work.

  • I was the founder and Executive Director of a non-profit organization in Denver, which provided mental health, youth mentoring, HIV prevention, and ESL services to the underserved immigrant population.

  • While in private practice for over twenty years, I worked with families impacted by divorce, trauma, domestic violence, child abuse, and other issues.

Forensic Work with Families and Children

Many years before I began to work with custody cases, I had tested the waters in the courtroom as a caseworker by filing D&N (Dependency & Neglect) cases in court. I found the work challenging but encouraging, as I faced opportunities to enforce reunification plans in the best interest of children.

In 2009 I received in-depth training to become a CFI by the Colorado Bar Association. Three years later, I obtained further CFI training through the Colorado Judicial Branch. In the past fifteen years, I have become a seasoned CFI and PRE. I owe this not only to the many judges and attorneys who have supported my work, but to the many families who have taught me lessons about the uniqueness of children.
